Advent - A Gift in Waiting

Advent commences on Sunday 1 December when we celebrate waiting and preparation for the coming of Christ and to give praise and thanks to God for sending to us His Son.

Waiting is not one of the points most of us are too good at, probably when in queues, and maybe we look to take a short cut to reach our destination more quickly. Advent offers us a gift in waiting – the gift of God in Jesus Christ.

Holymoorside Holiday in the Lake District

10 people from Holymoorside took a holiday in Kendal for a few days in July.  Stopping at Skipton on the way there, they discovered an eco-stall in the market.  After a night in the hotel in Kendal, they set off to explore the town, wandered by the river and visited the Lakeland Life Museum, giving an insight into the past.  After lunch the group split up to visit different places in the town.

Coffee Morning for Papyrus raises £1800!

Nearly £1800 was raised at the coffee morning held at Holymoorside URC in an amazing show of solidarity and support for Papyrus, a charity supporting children and young people with suicidal thoughts.  Raffle tickets were sold to local groups and the coffee morning was advertised widely including on the Facebook page of Holymoorside past and present.  Offers of wine and cakes flooded in.  Harold Wibberley, a wood carver of birds donated 10 of his birds to sell and eight were sold on the day raising £400.  Ju Bramley warmly thanks everyone who supported the coffee morning.

North Derbyshire Resource Area

The Elders of St Andrew's and Rose Hill are working hard to complete their Pastorate Profiles and combine them into one document.  The Call Group with representatives from all the churches in the Area is meeting and gradually working their way through the various questions which need to be resolved.  They hope that everything will be ready by the end of October 2019 so that we can ask the Synod Ordained Ministry and Churches Group to declare the vacancy at their meeting in November.  The search for a minister can then begin.

It has been a long wait, especially for Rose Hill whose minister retired on Palm Sunday 2018.  However lot of work was needed to create the new pastorate.  Please pray for all those involved in the preparation, including our pastorate consultant, Revd Camilla Veitch, as she starts her sabbatical.  Revd Marcus Hargis will cover for her while she is away.

Food Bank Appeal

Chesterfield Food Bank is appealing for 'Christmassy' items.  Add a few things to your basket when you are shopping which will bring joy to a family or an individual.   Leave them in the box in your church.

Waterfall of Poppies

Holymoorside commemorates the centenary of the Armistice which ended hostilities in the First World War on 11th November 1918 with this waterfall of poppies.

Looking to the Future

Revd John Cook retired at the end of September 2018.  He and Ann have moved to Felixtowe where we pray they may enjoy a happy and fulfilling retirement.

Holymoorside and St Andrew's are moving into interesting times.  Our two churches are joining five others to form the United Reformed Church North Derbyshire Resource Area.  The other churches are Rose Hill URC in the centre of Chesterfield, Calow URC, West Derbyshire URC Wirksworth, Fountain Square Church Tideswell (Methodist/United Reformed), and Buxton URC.

The Plight of the 'Windrush' Generation

Thousands of men and women who arrived in the UK as children during the first wave of Commonwealth immigration after the second World War, now face being threatened with deportation. Read about their plight here.

Should anyone in your churches be affected by the Government's failings in regard to the Windrush generation - themselves, or someone they know or are asked to help - you may wish to let them know of this resource, of which we have been advised by Churches Together in England.

The Home Office has set up a dedicated web page to help Commonwealth citizens confirm their status in the UK:

There is also a freephone number: 0800 678 1925.  This line is open Mon-Sat 9am - 5pm, Sun 10am - 4pm
